Statement Regarding Recent VA Court Decision
We want to address recent developments regarding the legal proceedings involving American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) in Richmond, Virginia. There have been misleading reports suggesting that AMP is immediately required to disclose information on its donors. We want to clarify that this is not the case.
AMP, in accordance with federal law protecting First Amendment rights, maintains the legal right to confidentiality of its donors. The recent court ruling focused specifically on AMP's compliance with Virginia state solicitation laws, ensuring procedural adherence within the state's regulatory framework. That court ruled that the Attorney General could investigate AMP’s compliance with state laws, and has not yet issued a written order as of the time of this statement. Our attorneys continue to seek clarification on the scope of the court’s ruling, and based on that AMP will decide whether it will choose to appeal any court decision through appropriate channels.
We want to reassure you that AMP remains steadfast in its commitment to uphold the rights and privacy of its members and donors consistent with all laws. Our legal team continues to vigorously defend these rights as the legal process unfolds.
