American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) is a leading grassroots advocacy organization dedicated to educating the American public and policymakers about Palestine and mobilizing communities to advance justice, freedom, and human rights for the Palestinian people. Through education, advocacy, media engagement, and movement-building, AMP plays a central role in shaping the national conversation on Palestine in the United States.
As AMP continues to grow in scope, visibility, and impact, the organization is strengthening its leadership and communications capacity to meet increasing opportunities and challenges in a rapidly evolving media and political landscape.
Position Summary
The Communications Director is a senior communications leader responsible for shaping, managing, and executing AMP’s overall communications strategy across earned media, messaging, publications, and public-facing narratives. Reporting directly to the Executive Director and working in close coordination with the Digital Director, the Communications Director ensures message discipline, strategic clarity, and narrative alignment across all AMP platforms and campaigns.
This role is ideal for an experienced communications professional with a strong background in advocacy, public affairs, or nonprofit communications—particularly someone deeply knowledgeable about Palestine and the dynamics of the Palestine movement in the United States.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Communications & Messaging
- Develop and lead a comprehensive communications strategy that advances AMP’s mission, advocacy priorities, and organizational goals.
- Craft and refine AMP’s core messaging, talking points, and narrative frameworks to ensure consistency and effectiveness across platforms.
- Advise the Executive Director and senior leadership on communications strategy, public positioning, and reputational risk management.
Media Relations & Public Affairs
- Serve as AMP’s lead strategist for earned media, including national, regional, and alternative outlets.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, producers, and media allies.
- Oversee press outreach, media pitches, press releases, statements, op-eds, and rapid-response communications.
- Prepare and coach AMP leadership and designated spokespeople for media appearances and interviews.
Content Oversight & Editorial Leadership
- Oversee the development of high-quality written content, including statements, reports, opinion pieces, newsletters, and advocacy materials.
- Serve as AMP’s senior copywriter and collaborate with all other internal and external writers to ensure editorial excellence and alignment with strategy.
- Maintain editorial standards, tone, and political clarity across all communications outputs.
Cross-Departmental Collaboration
- Work closely with the Digital Director to align traditional communications with digital strategy, social media campaigns, and online advocacy.
- Coordinate messaging with education, policy, grassroots, and development teams to support campaigns, events, and organizational initiatives.
Crisis & Rapid Response Communications
- Lead crisis communications planning and execution during high-profile moments, political developments, or media attacks.
- Monitor media narratives and public discourse related to Palestine and AMP’s work, identifying opportunities and risks.
- Ensure timely, accurate, and principled responses to breaking news and emergent issues.
- Demonstrated ability to perform effectively under pressure, with full availability during crises, and a commitment to providing timely responses, including outside regular working hours and on holidays whenever needed.
Required Qualifications
Professional Experience & Skills
- 7+ years of progressive experience in communications, media relations, public affairs, or advocacy communications.
- Proven experience developing and executing communications strategies in a nonprofit, advocacy, political, or movement-based organization.
- Strong media relations background with a demonstrated ability to secure earned media and manage press relationships.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with experience producing high-stakes, public-facing content.
- Strong strategic judgment, political acuity, and ability to operate effectively in high-pressure environments.
Knowledge of Palestine & the U.S. Movement Landscape
- Deep knowledge and understanding of the Palestine issue, including its historical, political, and human rights dimensions.
- Strong familiarity with the Palestine movement in the United States, including:
- Key organizations, coalitions, and grassroots networks
- Media narratives and political sensitivities surrounding Palestine advocacy
- The U.S. political and policy environment related to Palestine
- Demonstrated ability to communicate about Palestine with clarity, accuracy, and strategic nuance to diverse audiences.
- Comfort navigating opposition narratives, media bias, and politicized environments with professionalism and confidence.
Leadership & Professional Attributes
- Mid-level to senior professional maturity, capable of operating as a trusted advisor to executive leadership.
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to work across departments and leadership levels.
- High level of organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in national advocacy organizations or social justice movements.
- Background in crisis communications or issues management.
- Familiarity with Muslim, Arab, or allied community organizations in the U.S.
- Experience coordinating communications for large-scale campaigns, events, or policy initiatives.
- Residence in the DMV area is highly preferred.
