VICTORY! Support members of Congress who took a stand on Palestinian rights!
In an extraordinary show of support by Congress, 32 members issued a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson calling for Israel to end its persecution of Palestinian human rights defender Issa Amro, who is facing several years in prison based upon 18 old, trump-up charges.
The “Dear Colleage” letter was sponsored by Reps. Mark Pocan (D-WI), along with Keith Ellison (D-MN), Betty McCollum (D-MN), and Ralph Blumenauer (D-OR). It states, “We fear that Israeli military courts deliberating over Mr. Amro’s charges will be unlikely to render a fair and impartial verdict given that the conviction rate within that system is 99.74 percent.”
This letter casts doubt on Issa’s ability to receive a fair trial and it defends the right of Palestinians like Issa to protest against Israeli military occupation and settlements.
This is the largest number to date of U.S. congressmen and women
who have taken a public stand for Palestinian human rights.
Issa Amro is known worldwide for his nonviolent activism. The 18 charges – some of which had been dismissed previously -- are meant to silence his work.
Issa’s trial is set for July 9; and he faces several years in prison if convicted. “This case is about more than just one activist,” said AMP government relations coordinator Kareem El-Hosseiny. “This is really about the unjust treatment of Palestinians, who are routinely treated unfairly by the Israeli military court system.”
