(CHICAGO 10/04/2010) – Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren will be speaking at Northwestern University on Monday. The American Muslims for Palestine strongly condemns his presence on an American campus and calls upon all supporters of Palestine to turn out to protest this event.

Ambassador Oren is the figure at the center of a controversial story out of the University of California, Irvine, where the Muslim Student Union was banned from activities – including holding religious services – and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service after students interrupted Oren’s speech several times last winter.

As a representative of the state of Israel that has violated international law for decades in its occupation of the Palestinian people- including the brutal and inhumane siege on Gaza – Oren has no right speaking on an American campus where the emphasis should be on creating positive global leaders who work for justice and liberty for all the world’s citizens.

TAKE ACTION

AMP and several chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine are holding a rally beginning at 4 p.m. at McCormick Auditorium at Norris University Center, 1999 Campus Drive, Evanston, IL.

It is imperative that we let Northwestern University officials and event organizers know that it is unacceptable to host a representative of a state that has been found to have COMMITTED WAR CRIMES AND GRAVE CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY during its three-week assault on Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009. Also, the United Nations’ Human Rights Council recently found that Israeli soldiers EXECUTED six of the nine murdered passengers of the Freedom Flotilla and tortured the surviving passengers.

The rally and demonstration is endorsed and supported by the Chicago Committee Against War and Racism (CCAWR), Jewish Voices for Peace- Chicago Chapter (JVP), International Solidarity Movement- Chicago Chapter (ISM), ANSWER Coalition, The Chicago Network to send a U.S. Boat to Gaza and the Students for Justice in Palestine IIT, Depaul, Benedictine and University of Chicago. For information, contact Awad Hamdan, chairman of AMP Chicago, at 773.951.2020.
