(CHICAGO 04/14/2012) – In solidarity with Palestinian political prisoners, the American Muslims for Palestine is taking part in a global day of action on Tuesday, April 17.

AMP is co-sponsoring, “Hungry for Justice: Fast in Solidarity,” organized by the Chicago Movement for Palestinian Rights (CMPR), which is asking supporters to fast from dawn to sunset. Afterward, a dinner and discussion will be offered at the gallery of CAIR-Chicago, 28 E. Jackson Blvd, Suite 1700, Chicago, beginning at 7 p.m.

Bekah Wolf, a Jewish-American activist and co-founder of the Palestine Solidarity Project, will address the attendees via Skype. She lives in the town of Beit Ommar and has worked in the West Bank since 2003. She will speak on recent developments in the prisoner rights movement, with a special focus on child detainees and administrative detention. Guests will also have the opportunity to write letters on behalf of Palestinian prisoners, make political art/posters and network with local solidarity activists.

The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited so registration is required. Dinner will be served, and attendees are encouraged to bring a dessert to share.  E-mail your RSVP to [email protected].

Other co-sponsors include Jewish Voice for Peace-Chicago (JVP), Palestine Solidarity Group-Chicago (PSG), and US Palestinian Community Network-Chicago (USPCN).

Since 1974, April 17 has been commemorated annually as Palestinian Prisoners’ Day. Currently there are more than 4500 Palestinians in Israeli prisons and detention centers; nearly 200 of these prisoners are children. More than 320 prisoners are held - without charge or trial - under administrative detention.
