Thank Representatives Who opposed H. Res. 867

At a time when American foreign policy is heavily influenced by pro-Israeli and Zionist forces, standing for truth and justice in Palestine is often a daunting and lonely challenge. And in the case of at least two congress people – former Illinois Senator Paul Findley and former Georgia Representative Cynthia McKinney – standing for justice and against the apartheid policies of Israel can mean the end of a political career.

Dear supporters:

At a time when American foreign policy is heavily influenced by pro-Israeli and Zionist forces, standing for truth and justice in Palestine is often a daunting and lonely challenge. And in the case of at least two congress people – former Illinois Senator Paul Findley and former Georgia Representative Cynthia McKinney – standing for justice and against the apartheid policies of Israel can mean the end of a political career.

On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H. Res 867, which asked Congress to repudiate the findings of the UN-commissioned Goldstone Report on Israel’s three-week offensive last winter against the civilian population of Gaza. The report is of vital importance not just to Palestinians who live with the realities of Israel’s illegal occupation on a daily basis but for the protection and advance of human rights around the world.

Globally renowned and respected jurist Richard Goldstone, the report’s author, has been quoted in published reports as saying, Resolution 867 "includes serious factual inaccuracies and instances where information and statements are taken grossly out of context."

The nonbinding resolution passed 344-36. However, the American Muslims for Palestine is heartened to see representatives voted against the resolution and 22 voted “present,” indicating an unwillingness to take sides on the issue.

The American Muslims for Palestine applauds the courage these elected officials demonstrated by opposing the Zionist-influenced resolution, whose passage absolves Israel of any responsibility for the war crimes and possible crimes against humanity it committed in Operation Cast Lead. AMP already has sent letters of thanks and support to the representatives who voted against the resolution as well as to those who voted “present.”
