Take action to save Al Aqsa

Action alert
July 18, 2017

The American Muslims for Palestine, a national, education organization, is alarmed by the recent developments at the Al Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem. Israeli authorities closed the mosque for Friday prayers last week. When it reopened, worshipers were greeted with metal detectors and checkpoints outside the mosque's gates.

Israel is using the current situation in Jerusalem as a pretext to implement long-standing plans to divide Al Aqsa mosque like they did to the Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron. This new move violates international law, restricts freedom of religion and violates the internationally agreed upon status quo of the Al Aqsa compound.

We cannot allow these new punitive restrictions to become normal. Palestinians are protesting the metal detectors by refusing to enter the compound, praying instead outside.
There are several things you can do:

1. Call your members of Congress. Find their phone numbers at www.govtrack.us.
Ask them to call Todd Holmstron, the director of the State Department’s Office of Israel and Palestinian Affairs to ask him to pressure Israel to remove the metal detectors and checkpoints and to allow Palestinians access to Al Aqsa.

Holmstrom’s contact number: 202.647.3671.

Talking Points

The Israeli military closed the Al Aqsa sanctuary in Jerusalem and placed metal detectors and checkpoints at the gates. Doing so contravenes international law, restricts religious freedoms and violates the internationally agreed upon status quo of the Al Aqsa compound.

The new tactics imposed by Israel authorities will only inflame tensions in Palestine and the Middle East and eventually could lead to massive unrest in the Muslim world that would destabilize the region and threaten U.S. national interests there.

The U.S. must ensure Israel abides by the status quo that existed before October 2015, because allowing changes to this long-standing agreement will surely destabilize the region and threaten U.S. national interests.
And finally, the U.S. must pressure Israel to end the modern world’s longest-lasting military occupation and allow Palestinians their liberty, self-determination and right to return to their homeland.
