Israel must be held accountable for war crimes, law violations in last summer’s attack on Gaza
(WASHINGTON DC 07/08/2015) – Today, on the first anniversary of Israel’s 50-day military assault on the Palestinians of Gaza, the American Muslims for Palestine announces it is co-sponsoring a briefing on Capitol Hill, asking the United States and international community to hold Israel accountable for war crimes and severe breaches of international law.
It is clear Israel committed war crimes by targeting civilians and civilian structures when the military ignored the law of distinction and proportionality. Reports by the United Nations, Defense for Children International Palestine and Amnesty International all document these egregious violations of international law.
As we commemorate this tragedy, there is much we can do to hold Israel accountable! A coalition of organizations, including AMP, led by the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, will hold a briefing on Capitol Hill on July 29, asking our elected officials to hold Israel accountable, especially relative to its violations of the US Arms Export Control Act and the Leahy Law, which prohibits American military assistance – including US foreign military aid – to countries that violate human rights.
Write and call your Members of Congress ask them:
1. To urge US Secretary of State John Kerry to investigate and hold Israel accountable for using US weapons against Palestinians in violation of the Arms Export Control Act and the Leahy Law.
2. Invite them and their staff to the Capitol Hill briefing at noon on Wednesday, July 29, in 121 Cannon House Building. We will discuss Israel’s failure to hold itself accountable and how and why the US should do so.
3. As them to sponsor or sign onto our Dear Colleague letter to Secretary of State John Kerry calling for the United States to hold Israel accountable for its use of US weapons to kill Palestinian children and wantonly destroy Palestinian homes
This effort is led by the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, AMP, the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee, Friends Committee on National Legislation and the US Palestine Community Network.
