AMP Statement on the Current Crisis in Gaza

The escalating violence and the continually deteriorating situation in Gaza is unfortunate and American Muslims for Palestine calls on all sides to come together to find a peaceful resolution to prevent the further loss of innocent lives. The increased violence and the civil war that has broken out reemphasizes the need to address the illegal occupation and the virtual prison that Palestinians are forced to live in and its role in the latest developments.

The failure to recognize a democratically elected government coupled with the sanctions placed on the Palestinians by the United States, Israel and the International Quartet further exasperated an already difficult situation for the Palestinian people. The current civil war is a microcosm of dangerous precedents set by our [United States] government in promoting civil war in the region -- first in Iraq, then Lebanon and now Palestine -- by using an uneven hand to support one side of a conflict over another. In the case of the Palestinians, the United States arming of Fatah has partly led to the current crisis by creating a situation of despair on the ground.

While American Muslims for Palestine does not support any side in the current conflict or condone the means being used to achieve political goals; we continue to support the just cause of the Palestinians themselves. American Muslims for Palestine calls on people both in the United States and abroad to continue their support of the Palestinian cause at this critical juncture to prevent a further escalation of this civil war.
